Senior Photo Locations: Downtown Detroit

High school senior portraits are so much more than just a quick snapshot for the yearbook. They are a celebration of who you are at this milestone moment, a transition between chapters, and a reflection of your unique style.

One of the most exciting decisions you will make during this planning process is choosing your session locations. Because we live in Southeast Michigan, we are incredibly spoiled. From gritty, artistic urban alleyways to serene, sun-drenched state parks, this area has some of the most versatile and stunning photography settings in the country.

To help you choose the perfect vibe for your session, I’ll be featuring some of my favorite senior portrait locations across Metro Detroit, Ann Arbor, and beyond. First up…

Downtown Detroit

Best for: Bold, high-fashion, and modern urban seniors.

If your style leans sophisticated, sleek, trendy, or high-concept, downtown Detroit offers an unmatched energy. The city has so many textures, colors, and architectural features.

  • The Belt Alley and Parker Alley: Located in the heart of downtown, the Belt Alley is lined with massive, colorful murals, industrial metalwork, and overhead string lights. It gives your portraits an instant editorial, streetwear-inspired look. Similarly, Parker Alley (located near the Shinola Hotel) is a brick paved, string-lit alley with a great aesthetic.

  • Eastern Market: Perfect for the senior who wants a splash of color. This historic district is famous for its industrial architecture and vibrant, rotating murals painted by local and international artists.

  • The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA): Just steps away from the downtown core, the DIA’s grand white marble exterior, towering pillars, and clean stone steps offer a timeless, classic, and sophisticated backdrop that feels like a European palace.

  • Campus Martius and the Detroit Riverwalk: Downtown Detroit near Campus Martius, is a perfect location for dense, urban, city photos. And the 3.5 mile-long Detroit Riverwalk gives you access to an amazing number of shooting options - from views of the Ambassador Bridge to Milliken State Park, and more. It’s a beautiful mix of nature, water, and city skyline.

  • Belle Isle Park: Located right in the middle of the Detroit River, Belle Isle is a crown jewel of Southeast Michigan. It is the ultimate "two-in-one" location because it effortlessly blends historic architecture with breathtaking natural landscapes.

    • The James Scott Memorial Fountain: Featuring gorgeous white marble carvings and cascading water, this fountain brings an elegant, timeless romance to your portraits.

    • The Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory and Oudolf Garden: The glass dome and surrounding meticulously manicured gardens offer a lush, tropical oasis vibe.

    • Sunset Point: For the absolute best view of the Detroit skyline, we head here just as the sun dips below the horizon. The golden hour light reflecting off the water with the city in the background is spectacular.

  • Corktown and the Michigan Central Station: Corktown is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Detroit and has a great collection of 19th-century architecture, a commercial row, and the iconic renovated Michigan Central Station. It’s the perfect location for lifestyle senior sessions with a historic urban feel.
